Cotton Spinning |
In
the Syrian government, eight ministries are
involved in textile industries. These are
the State Planning Commission (SPC),
Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade,
Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade,
Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Industry,
Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of
Higher Education.
Cotton spinning and weaving in Syria are
operated only by state-owned mills, while
the private sector plays a limited role in
the production of cotton textile downstream.
The
General Organization of Textile
Industries (GOTI)
is the largest body in the general
organizations working under the Ministry of
Industry. Its role is to supervise and to
coordinate the public textile mills.
State-owned cotton mills are located mainly
in Damascus and in Aleppo. New mills were
implemented in other regions like the coast,
to reach a total spinning capacity of 100
kilo ton of yarn, and weaving capacity of
100 million metres of grey fabric. The
average age of public cotton mills in Syria
is 30 years.
